Soup Kitchen Feeds 150 Sporty Kids

By United Through Sport - Posted on 31 January 2009

The Umzingisi School of Sporting Excellence is dedicated to providing underprivileged kids with schooling and sports training in the townships of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. In addition, they aim to feed the 150 students of the school, as without this support, many of the kids would otherwise go without meals for several days each week. This situation is a direct result of the severe poverty in the townships, which is exacerbated by the fact that many of the students have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS and depend on their extended family for whatever support they can provide.

To support these efforts, United Through Sport has provided a grant of £5,600 to renovate the School kitchen so that there is a proper, clean facility to prepare food for the students. In addition, the grant will cover one year of food for the kids and one year of support for staff to run the kitchen.

The kitchen is a huge lifeline to the disadvantaged young people supported by the school. Feeding the kids is essential to their general health and wellbeing. This is especially the case for the young aspiring sports professionals attending the school, for whom good diet and nutrition are essential to ftheir uture success as athletes.

Many thanks to all those who supported the development of the kitchen by buying a Soup Kitchen recipe book!
