Physiotherapy Project In The Community

United Through Sport is excited to announce the launch of our latest community project in Labadi, Ghana, a suburb of Accra.

Easy access to legitimate physio care in Ghana is a nationwide problem which affects many communities and in particular, aspiring athletes. UTS volunteer and qualified physiotherapist Nicola Dinsdale spent several weeks working with athletes in the Greater Accra region and identified the need for free, easy access to physio care. Following her experiences she grew concerned with the attitude of young athletes relating to their own health and well-being and the lack of physiotherapy available to them. Her particular concern was the prevalence of young sportsmen and woman training and playing whilst injured, putting both their health and their careers at risk.

Nicola’s assessment prompted the UTS team to look into a way of providing free physio care to local athletes and their community.

In a few short months since Nicola’s visit, UTS is delighted to announce the opening of a brand new Physiotherapy unit within the La Mansamo Kpee Clinic. The Physio unit acts as a drop in centre and will provide vital care for athletes and the local community. We are fortunate to have 6 physiotherapists joining us from Kings College London, UK – whose expertise will be vital in the success of the unit. As part of our ongoing commitment to improving the lives of young sporting talent our volunteer programme will not only coach the athletes but also educate them on nutrition, health and well-being and on the importance of recovering after injury using legitimate physiotherapy treatment.
