Warwick School visits Umzingisi
The Umzingisi rugby boys had visitors from the UK on Saturday the 24th July 2010. Warwick School is on a South African Tour from 15 July to 2 August 2010. The Warwick boys are on a rugby and hockey tour and are playing some of the top schools in the country.
Having been to some of these schools already, playing our boys was a bit of a change from what they had seen as we gave them insight to the township. The rugby matches were against our U/17 A and B teams and the hockey was against a local community team which was our invitational team. Our boys were pretty excited to be playing a top school like Warwick and were looking forward to meet their opponents.
The matches went well with Warwick only winning one of the games. The results of the games were as follows: The Umzingisi Invitational hockey team beat Warwick 3-2, the rugby U/17B team had a final score of 22-21 to Warwick and the Umzingisi U/17A team won their game 32-29. It was a close call on all the matches with both teams giving each other challenges on the field.
At the end of the day, a brief presentation was held with our Director, Nick Mould, thanking our visitors and wishing them well for the remainder of their tour. The Director of Rugby, Mark Nasey also said a few words on behalf of Warwick School. Gifts were exchanged and everyone was treated to a South African meal so our visitors could have a taste of some of our traditional cuisine; umngqusho and curry bunnies.
It was great having our visitors and we enjoyed the challenge. Having opportunities to play against top schools is always great in boosting our boys’ confidence and communication skills. We hope this was not the last visit from Warwick and we wish them all the best for all their future endeavours.
