New Sports Academy Brings Hope to Townships

By United Through Sport - Posted on 20 December 2007

After many months in the making, The Umzingisi School of Sporting Excellence will be opening its doors in January to 50 talented young black athletes living in the disadvantaged township community of New Brighton, Port Elizabeth.

This exciting project brings together top sports coaching and quality secondary education to provide a holistic approach to education for young athletes aged 14 years old living within the township who would otherwise not have the opportunity to develop their sporting talent and reach their full potential.

The aims of the school are to not only enhance sporting levels in football, netball and rugby but offer a fully rounded education to increase the choices available to these talented individuals. Students are given the kind of attention and education that is hard to achieve in a regular school, as well as additional life skills training in subjects such as HIV/AIDS awareness, alcohol and drug abuse and career guidance.

United Through Sport is committed to working with our local project partners to support the growth of Umzingisi and develop students that will form part of South Africa’s sporting future as well as inspirational role models for a new generation.
