Join Our Charitable Rugby Coaching Expedition Across Africa - Bhubesi Pride 2011
United Through Sport is working with Richard Bennett to run a 5-month charitable rugby coaching expedition across Africa in 2011, called Bhubesi Pride, starting in Gloucestershire (UK) and ending in Cape Town (South Africa). Richard Bennett is currently building a team of 6 enthusiastic and motivated rugby coaches to take on the challenging journey.
Mission
15 schools in 10 African countries will be welcoming the team in 2011, as Bhubesi Pride will be putting in place a unique coaching structure, involving children and their teachers and coaches. United Through Sport and Bhubesi Pride will create a rugby legacy, by providing local coaches with the knowledge and resources required to continue the coaching programme in the future. British schools will also be linked with each African school, enabling British pupils to interactively engage in the project, and in the future. With long-term relationships being established, African communities can look forward to future sustainable development in their school environments.
Objectives
At each school, the Bhubesi Pride coaching team will carry out a unique coaching curriculum targeting three key objectives:
1. To unite African youngsters (boys and girls, aged 10-15) through the game of rugby, embedding health and social education into the coaching programme. The week will focus on developing children, starting with core skills, culminating in competitive and enjoyable rugby tournaments. Children will receive health and social education within each session. Much-needed rugby equipment will also be donated to each school.
2. To empower local teaching and coaching staff with the knowledge and resources required to continue the coaching programme in the future; creating a rugby legacy. African coaches will be provided with simple coaching guides and long-term development programmes and, together with the appropriate mentoring over the course of the week, coaches will gain the confidence to build these ideas into existing educational curriculums.
3. To link each African school with a British school. Not only will this relationship provide benefits to the African schools involved in the programme – putting in place developmental strategies to improve the welfare of pupils and staff and their facilities in the future – it will also give British pupils and staff the opportunity to fully involve themselves in the entire programme. Staff will be provided with simple teaching guides with cross-curricular activities and interschool competitions. There may even be the opportunity for British schools to arrange visits to an African country during the expedition – in their February or Easter break 2011.
Endorsements
With support from the English Rugby Football Union (RFU) and the South African Rugby Union (SARU), Bhubesi Pride has also developed some hugely exciting press coverage, as well as support from a number of professional and ex-professional rugby players, including legendary Welsh International and British Lion, JPR Williams.
