Warwick School visits Umzingisi
The Umzingisi rugby boys had visitors from the UK on Saturday the 24th July 2010. Warwick School is on a South African Tour from 15 July to 2 August 2010. The Warwick boys are on a rugby and hockey tour and are playing some of the top schools in the country.
World Cup Period
The school holiday that has just passed has probably been the busiest we have ever had by far. Having the World Cup in South Africa meant extending these by 2 more weeks which meant more activities for us to fill up the kids’ time and eliminate any form of dullness from their holiday. Of course they had the matches to watch on TV but being there live would obviously be much better! Attending the matches was just one of the activities we had planned for the kids over the holidays. Holiday camps were lined up as well as tournaments for each camp.
School Holiday Programme Final Tournament
With the holiday camps at an end, it was time for the big tournament where the final teams from all four camps went against each other. Saturday the 10th July was the perfect day for this as the final of the World Cup was held the following day.
Holiday Camps
Umzingisi has been running holiday camps throughout the duration of the school holidays. Each camp runs from Monday to Friday where a football tournament is held at the end of the week. The camps are comprised of sports coaching but also incorporate the YDF curriculum which coaches the kids in life skills and focuses a lot on HIV/Aids awareness.
Swiss experience for kids
It was all red and white on the 20th June at the Dan Qeqe Stadium in Zwide (one of the townships we work in). The Suisse were playing Chile the following day and the kids had the pleasure of meeting one of the players from the Switzerland team, Philippe Senderos as well as the Swiss Ambassador, Mr Rudolf Baerfuss. The officials from the Swiss Football Association were there to interact with the kids.
Umzingisi boys meet Danny Jordaan
Over the Easter holidays, the Port Elizabeth North Soccer Union, commonly known as PENSU (a league affiliating under SAFA), hosted a tournament in which our U/15 team participated and came in 3rd place.
The Easter Weekend Tournament was held at the Finnis Sports Ground and the CEO of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee, Danny Jordaan, was there to honour the event.

School of Excellence kids at World Cup Match
The first World Cup match to be played in Port Elizabeth was the Korea vs. Greece match on the 12th June 2010. As this was only the 2nd day of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the excitement of South Africa hosting the World Cup was still at its peak.
A selection of 20 kids from the School of Sporting Excellence was made for them to be part of this history. Criteria such as diligence and commitment were used to choose the lucky 20 who got the tickets to go watch the game. At the stadium, their behaviour proved just how much they deserved to be chosen for this.
Perfect World Cup Souvenir for Volunteers
Excitement has been bubbling up amongst our volunteers and local staff with the FIFA 2010 World Cup being held in South Africa. Needless to say, the country as a whole is beyond ecstatic as this is the first time the World Cup has ever been in the African continent.
Noddy Climbs to Everest Base Camp for UTS
Nadeem ‘Noddy’ Arshad has completed the impressive feat of climbing to Everest Base Camp (over 6000 metres above sea level) to raise over £500 for our project work in South Africa.
School of Excellence Kids Train to be Lifeguards
A selection of School of Excellence youngsters have been chosen to partake in a beach lifesaving course which will culminate in them becoming qualified beach life guards.
First Car Scrapped for United Through Sport!
Thanks to the fantastic work of the guys at Giveacar.co.uk, United Through Sport has just received a cheque after the first car of many was scrapped in aid of the charity.
Stationary donation for School of Excellence kids
Rio-tinto continued their all round support of the School of Excellence kids by providing 180 brand new stationary packs for all of the sponsored children at the School of Excellence. A new project under the A Chance To Play (ACTP) project umbrella (funded by VW Works Council through Terres des Hommes Germany) within Umzingisi is a real eye-catcher!
Opening of New Philani Gym at School of Excellence
The new Philani (place of health) Gym has been opened at the School of Excellence. The coming together of the gym really showed how a group of many individuals can all contribute to make one big project successful. The container where the gym is housed was provided by Anine Auguste, in memory of her late parents, Philocles and Anna-Marie.
DJs to Travel 23,000 Miles to 92 Football Grounds!
Local radio presenters Lee Partridge and Richard Williams have set themselves an incredible challenge in aid of United Through Sport - travel to all 92 English Football League and Premier League grounds in just one season!
Fun Fayres Raise £200
United Through Sport was represented at two local fayres over the August bank holiday weekend. Despite competing with the local attractions of duck and sheep racing, dog shows and a very busy ice-cream van, the charity still made nearly £200 selling soup recipe books and wristbands at the Chapel Row Fayre and Cold Ash Fete in West Berkshire.
Law Firm Give £300 Raffle Prize
On 2nd July 2009, law firm RadcliffesLeBrasseur held their annual summer event for staff. As part of the event, a raffle was held in aid of charity. A fantastic sum of over £300 was raised in aid of United Through Sport.
100% of the funds raised are to be dedicated to the Umzingisi School of Sporting Excellence in South Africa. Participants in the raffle were given details on what United Through Sport stand for and how the Umzingisi project is making a huge difference to kids in some of the poorest areas in Port Elizabeth.
Squash Marathon Raises £400
On 30th May, Matt Burnett, a squash coach from Berkshire, played squash and racketball for 10 straight hours to raise funds for United Through Sport!
The marathon rally was a great event and raised a smashing sum of over £400 for the charity.
100% of the funds will be dedicated to the 2009 campaign to raise £40,000 for the Umzingisi School of Sporting Excellence in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Thames Valley Uni Teams Up!
It was students versus staff on the sports pitch this May as Thames Valley University held its annual Sports Challenge fundraiser in aid of United Through Sport.
Now in its second year, Sports Challenge is organised by TVU’s volunteering team to raise money for charity and also raise awareness of the University’s community work.
Reading Run Raises Cash
Many thanks to Katy Weaver who ran the Reading Half Marathon on 29th March in aid of United Through Sport.
Thanks to her efforts the charity received £160 in sponsorship. Thankfully she didn't require the ambulance that she suggested she might need half-way through the course!
Soup Kitchen Feeds 150 Sporty Kids
The Umzingisi School of Sporting Excellence is dedicated to providing underprivileged kids with schooling and sports training in the townships of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. In addition, they aim to feed the 150 students of the school, as without this support, many of the kids would otherwise go without meals for several days each week.
Ironmen Do It Themselves for £1500
On 10th December, four adventurers took to the desert of Dubai to take part in one of the most challenging Ironman tournaments in the world.
With a 3.8km swim followed by a 180km bike and then a 42km run, the unofficial 'DIY Ironman' is an incredible test of endurance in the unbelievable heat of the UAE.
Soup Book Released
For their 2008 Christmas campaign, United Through Sport has produced a unique soup recipe book to support the Umzingisi School of Sporting Excellence in building a soup kitchen to feed all their students.
Phil Races 370km for United Through Sport
This year, Phil Hatzis ran, swam and cycled his way to 370km and nearly £1,200 for United Through Sport. The challenge involves completing a series of grueling sporting events starting with The London Marathon in April and culminating in the famous Ironman UK in September.
School of Excellence off to a Winning Start

Sheffield College Partnership Success
First year students studying for their Foundation Degree in Sports, Coaching and Exercise had a real workout when their course tutor, David Harrison, suggested partnering with United Through Sport to raise money for charity as part of their Event Organisation module.
New Sports Academy Brings Hope to Townships
After many months in the making, The Umzingisi School of Sporting Excellence will be opening its doors in January to 50 talented young black athletes living in the disadvantaged township community of New Brighton, Port Elizabeth.
Vital New Court for Township School
This September saw the grand opening of the brand spanking new hard court at Sithembile School near Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Fully funded through a £6,000 grant from United Through Sport, this investment in the local community offers crucial access to a high-quality venue for disadvantaged kids in a hugely deprived area.
Langa Lions Reach International Cup Final
Last month United Through Sport helped a squad of 12 rugby-mad children from the Langa township of Cape Town achieve their ultimate dream... To perform in front of South African international rugby legend, Chester Williams, at the final of the touraid U14 International Rugby Cup.
Age versus Experience in Triathlon Challenge
When United Through Sport fundraiser, Adrian Love, 20, went head to head against his brother-in-law Tom Collins, 29, at the Michelob Ultra London Triathlon on Saturday 4th August, he was out to prove that age overcomes experience every time. But was he right? Competing in the ‘Sprint’ event comprising of a 750m Swim, 21km Bike and 5.2km Run, Love’s hopes for glory appeared in jeopardy as Collins secured an early lead after an impressive swimming leg of only 12 minutes and 48 seconds.
Swimming the Solent Challenge
On Saturday 14th October 2006, three brave souls took up the challenge of swimming from the Isle of Wight to Portsmouth, across the choppy waters and shipping lanes of the Solent. All of the swimmers survived the crossing, and in the process raised around £1000 for United Through Sport.
United Through Sport Golf Day Tees-Off
On 4th October 2006, United Through Sport held their first Charity Golf Day at the Beaconsfield Golf Club.
Half-Marathon Madness
On Sunday 9th July 2006, Dan Woods and Sherden Timmins took on the challenge of the Wycombe half-marathon for United Through Sport.
The two runners posted differing times (the difference being around 30 minutes) but Sherden did wait patiently at the line for his less practised running partner! Together, they raised £750…

Crazy Marathon Canoeists
On 2nd July 2006, a group of river-hardened canoeists took to the Thames to paddle 26 miles for United Through Sport. The team took in the picturesque sights of Marlow, Bourne End, Bray and Windsor on their way to the hard-fought finish.
The marathon event raised over £400 for the charity.

Play Kit Provided to South African Orphanage
In support of their great work in caring for vulnerable children in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, United Through Sport has provided a £300 grant to the Maranatha orphanage to buy much needed play equipment for the resident children.
The kit will prove invaluable in providing a stimulating environment for severely disadvantaged kids.

The plane is slowly gaining height and taking an age to reach 10,000 ft. I am terrified. My last chance to escape; but I can’t. My pride won’t allow it… and the fact that I shall be raising a lot of money for charity. Five months ago, I gave a talk to a group of 80 women. I mentioned that I wanted to do a skydive for charity and about half the people there signed-up to sponsor me.
Brilliant Book Benefits United Through Sport
Thanks to a genius spark of imagination and a very different slant on travel writing, Emily Monk, a GAP SPORTS volunteer, has raised nearly £3000 for United Through Sport.
Football Team Fully Equipped
A local township football team on the famous South African Garden Route was this month fully equipped with crucial kit thanks to a £500 grant from United Through Sport.
DJs Play at Play for United Through Sport
On Saturday 25th October 2005, seven house DJs played to a crowd of 200 revellers at Play Bar in Clerkenwell, London. The event raised over £600 for United Through Sport.
The free-entry event was a great success and was aided by the change of the clocks which allowed the late licences to carry on a little later!

Military Challenge Raises £600
On 22nd October 2005, a group of strapping young lads embarked on a 7 mile marine style assault course, consisting of a 4 mile run, muddy bogs, underwater tunnels, freezing pools and a few surprises besides!
The event raised over £600 for United Through Sport. Many thanks to Andrew Platt, Richard Webley, Andrew McGinnigal, Chris Fairfax and Toby Hansen for their fantastic efforts.
