Siyakhula Curriculum in South Africa
The Siyakhula curriculum is a fun, interactive curriculum developed by United Through Sport South Africa in partnership with IMBEWU SUISSE.
It is aimed at addressing key health and educational issues as well as imparting important life skills. Siyakhula is aimed at educating the children holistically by covering a wide range of topics from identity and future aspirations to HIV / AIDS and from breaking a childs sense of entitlement to environmental awareness and gender equality.
The uniqueness of the curriculum is in the way it is delivered. It is not a classroom based curriculum and is delivered in an interactive manner using games and fun exercises to impart knowledge and encourage debate and discussion from the children themselves.
The curriculum is a 45 hour program that can be delivered to participants either daily or weekly and ends with a graduation aimed at giving participants a sense of achievement.
Once the curriculum has been completed with the participants, their understanding, awareness and attitude with regards to the topics within are assessed to record the impact. The aim of the curriculum is to raise awareness and to shift behavioral patterns with regards to the key issues for the children who participate. A secondary focus of this curriculum is to encourage ‘peer led’ behavioral change by motivating the participants to become opinion leaders in their social network of peers and siblings, thereby creating a ripple effect to reach many more children.
The curriculum is predominantly used within the Junior School of Excellence Program, where we work with the participants over a full year and can measure knowledge and attitude change to assess the full impact it has.
