Our Work in Ghana

United Through Sport have been working in Teshie, on the outskirts of Accra, since 2010, building up a solid base of beneficiaries, volunteers, and partners. We now work with over 5000 children from the local community, bringing educational and sporting opportunities to thousands of children in need. Our aim is for students to flourish both academically and within their chosen sport, therefore giving them the best possible opportunities to achieve their dreams of a career in the sporting world or embark on a successful career in the world of work.

The Mass Participation Programme aims to provide sporting opportunities to as many young people as possible. By providing varied sports activities and encouraging participation across all communities and from both genders we strive to reach as many children as we can through this programme. The MPP uses well known sports like Football (Soccer), Rugby, Cricket, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, and others to facilitate the first step in connecting with disadvantaged or vulnerable children and bringing together communities.

Our first objective is to improve the lives of those children by using sport as a means to improve self-confidence, increase self-esteem as well as teaching important values such as team work, dedication, camaraderie and self-respect. Our wider objective is to support children in matters of education and healthcare ranging from fun and interactive information sessions during training to financial support from our Sponsor a Child Project and educational support with our After School Project.

By offering a combination of sport, educational and financial support we can make a huge difference to lives of young underprivileged children living in Ghana. Not only can we empower children through sporting achievement, we can also help lay foundations for a brighter future.

Due to inadequate funding in the sector, education in Ghana is still in its developmental stage as compared to developed countries. As a result, the after school project was launched in recognition of the need to support children with their education as well as providing them with sporting opportunities.

At United Through Sport Ghana we are aware of the pressure that young sporting talent put on themselves whilst trying to fulfil their sporting ambitions. This determination to succeed in sport is often pursued to the detriment of children’s scholastic achievements. Put simply – when you’re eager to hit the football pitch after school, homework is the last thing on your mind!

The after school programme offers homework help, extra tuition and exam revision for those children who may otherwise struggle to keep up due to their dedication to sport.

The School of Excellence operates as a non-profit, fully residential school which has been created to give our talented young students a high quality education which can be moulded and tailored to fit in with their specialist sports training, matches and tournaments.

Due to the excellent connections that United Through Sport Ghana has built, both on an international platform and on a national level with many of Ghana’s sporting associations, students can expect to receive sporting and educational opportunities on an international level which are unrivalled to those offered by other schools and charities in the country.

Students attending the School of Excellence will be doing so as part of a 5-year scholarship programme in which they will receive the following:

  • A safe, healthy, loving and supportive environment
  • High quality, international education at the School of Excellence
  • World-class sports coaching and supporting services such as physiotherapy and sports psychology
  • Access to high quality sports and training facilities

The Power of Sport

“By identifying young sporting talent in Ghana, we have been able to get some fantastic opportunities for our kids to receive a University education in the USA. Working with our children from a young age, enables us to get them well prepared so they can have the right approach and attitude for the future”.
